So this Friday, I have my first appointment to try on wedding dresses. I've started to look at some, and I'm kind of at a loss to what I really want. I like the idea of strapless, but I don't like the idea of yanking up a dress that is falling down all night. I like halter tops. I don't want anything too fancy, but I'm not sure if I want a completely plain dress either. Much like venues, there are just so many options!
I printed out pictures of a couple dresses that I like, and I'll bring those along with me, and hopefully a friend of mine is coming along (I planned poorly, and scheduled the appointment at a time when most people can't make it), and maybe these things plus a knowledgeable sales person will give me some guidance.
Bridesmaid dresses are also something I've been thinking about, since I've got to pick those out soon too. I like the idea of a tea-length dress. I'm unsure about whether I want everyone to wear the same dress, or if I just want same color and bridesmaids to pick out a dress that suits them at the appropriate length. I also have to figure out color, which will hopefully come once we decide on a venue. So many choices!

A couple of thoughts:
ReplyDeleteWhen I married Dan, the cut of the dress was very simple, but the fabric was fabulous. The opposite option is a fancier dress, but in a simple fabric. I think fancy cut AND fancy fabric would be overwhelming.
When I tried on wedding dresses, it became obvious pretty quickly what I didn't like. Hoo boy.
I've seen every option on bridesmaids: same dress, same color/different dress, same dress/different colors, wear their own clothes, wear a period costume, etc. One of the most interesting was a friend who bought silk yardage in two colors (hers were red and black) and told the attendants to make something they liked. The variety was amazing, but it all worked because they were all the same fabric.
my dress was strapless and after the alterations i didn't have to worry about pulling it up. stayed put so, if you like strapless don't let that deter you!
ReplyDeleteI like to watch some of the wedding/bridal shows on TV for sheer entertainment. The Platinum wedding on We (I think) makes me giggle at the extravagences. However, some of them can be good ideas at a more reasonable cost. :)
ReplyDeleteNot sure if this is your style, but my friend had a vintage-y wedding and found her wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses here:

She went for a kind of 20s-30s glamorous look and the wedding was absolutely gorgeous.
Also, you should totally take Thorson with you to try on dresses because he used to be a bridal consultant. For real.
